The Truth about line level analog audio amplifiers
What most people don't know is that splitting analog audio is
fundamentally different than splitting video or digital audio. Video &
digital audio are universally defined as 75 ohm terminated 75 ohm source
impedance signals, and absolutely require active amplification to split.
Analog audio, however, does not have well defined source and termination
impedances. The source is usually 600 ohms or less, and the termination
impedance is usually around 20K (although 600 ohms and others are used).
What this means is that some situations will require amplification to split, and
other situations will not.
You do not need an amplifier for analog audio if:
- All your receivers have input termination above 10K ohms
(this is pretty common)
- AND you are driving short cables (<~10 ft)
If all these apply, then just use a Y cable
to split your audio.
You do need an amplifier for analog audio if:
- Any of your receivers have input termination < 10K ohms
- OR you are driving long cables
When you purchase a line level audio amp,
make sure it 75 ohm source impedance. Keep in mind
that MOST A/V splitters on the market do not have amplification on the stereo
audio, they just wire the RCA jacks together in the box (equivalent to Y
cables).
HD Video & Audio splitting
The CB003AA supports composite video, digital audio, and
